Several days ago, I read a communication from one of our RAGAS board members, PDG Aswini Kar. The timing was perfect since we are halfway through this Rotary Year and It’s time to redo the TRAGAST strategic plan. As we consider our near and mid-range future, some of my questions include:
What activities should we increase?
Which ones should we decrease or eliminate?
What is the best way for our unique organization to secure the funding we need?
How much do we need, really?
The email (copied below) gives me much food for thought, perhaps it will be useful in your process as well?
Dear Board Members,
Rotary Clubs, with their global network and community focus, can play a significant role in the fight against human trafficking and modern slavery. Here are several activities and initiatives that Rotary Clubs can undertake to contribute to this cause. Board Members are requested to go through and offer their valuable suggestions.
1. Awareness and Education
- Raise Awareness: Educate communities, schools, and workplaces about the signs of trafficking and modern slavery. Awareness can lead to better identification and prevention.
- Training Programs: Implement training programs for law enforcement, healthcare providers, and other professionals to recognize and respond to trafficking.
2. Policy and Advocacy**
-Support Stronger Laws: Advocate for stronger laws and better enforcement against trafficking. Support policies that protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable.
- Lobby for Resources: Push for increased funding for anti-trafficking programs and services for survivors.
3. Support and Empowerment
-Victim Support: Provide comprehensive support services for survivors, including legal aid, counselling, job training, and housing.
-Community Empowerment: Work with vulnerable communities to provide education, economic opportunities, and support networks that reduce their risk of exploitation.
4. Collaboration and Partnerships
- Work with NGOs: Partner with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are dedicated to fighting human trafficking. Support their efforts through donations, volunteering, and advocacy.
- Build Coalitions: Collaborate with other organizations, governments, and businesses to create a unified approach to combating trafficking.
5. Economic and Social Development
- Address Root Causes: Focus on addressing the root causes of trafficking, such as poverty, inequality, and lack of education. Economic development programs can help reduce vulnerabilities.
- Support Ethical Practices: Promote and support businesses that adhere to ethical labour practices and work to eliminate forced labour from their supply chains.
6.Share Information: Encourage sharing of information and best practices between organizations and governments to improve collective efforts.
7. Technology and Innovation
- Leverage Technology: Use technology to track trafficking networks, enhance victim identification, and raise awareness. Innovations like apps and online platforms can play a role in prevention and intervention.
- Promote Digital Literacy: Educate individuals, especially vulnerable populations, about online safety and the risks of exploitation.
8. Personal Actions
- Stay Informed: Educate yourself about trafficking and modern slavery. Understanding the issue is the first step to taking effective action.
- Support Ethical Brands: Choose to buy products from companies that ensure their supply chains are free from forced labor.
By combining these approaches and working together, we can make significant strides toward eradicating human trafficking and modern slavery. It's a global challenge that requires local action,
What activities and initiatives will you take as we move forward in our fight against human trafficking / modern slavery?
